Ce phare, mis en service en mars 1874, est construit en pierre de taille de granit reposant sur un socle de béton et de pierre aménagé en débarcadère. La tour du Four, ainsi que celle des Pierres Noires, est la première, parmi les phares en mer, à s'affranchir de la forme très incurvée dite « en trompette » en vigueur jusque là.
